Software Engineer, Front End and Accessibility

Build resident-facing interfaces that meet WCAG properly, on the devices residents actually use.

State and local government web content falls under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Department of Justice rule adopts WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the technical standard. This role builds to that from the start, because remediation after launch costs more and works less well.

What you will do

  • Build accessible, responsive interfaces for public-facing agency services.
  • Test with a keyboard and a screen reader, not only an automated scanner, and know the difference in what each finds.
  • Work from real content and real data volumes rather than ideal placeholder text.
  • Build forms that produce clean data and tell a resident plainly what went wrong.
  • Collaborate on design systems and component libraries agency staff can maintain.
  • Support accessibility conformance documentation and remediation planning.

What we are looking for

  • Three or more years building production front end applications.
  • Fluency in modern JavaScript, semantic HTML, and CSS.
  • Practical WCAG 2.1 Level AA knowledge and hands-on assistive technology testing.
  • Performance awareness on modest devices and slow connections.
  • Experience consuming APIs and handling their error states honestly.
  • Care about the person on the other side of the form.

Helpful to have

  • Experience preparing or reviewing an accessibility conformance report.
  • Multilingual interfaces and language access work.
  • Progressive web application experience.
  • Prior public-sector or civic technology work.
