Senior Software Engineer, Backend and APIs

Most of the difficulty in agency software is not the feature, it is the six systems it has to agree with. This is a senior role building services and integrations that hold up when the data is messy, the upstream system is a decade old, and the record has legal consequences.

What you will do

• Design and build backend services and APIs for permitting, licensing, case management, and resident-facing applications.
• Integrate with vendor systems whose interfaces range from a modern API to a nightly file drop, and make the failure modes visible.
• Model data for records that carry retention and disclosure obligations.
• Write tests that would catch the defect before a clerk does.
• Review other engineers work and raise the standard of the codebase rather than only the ticket.
• Hand over what you build: documentation, runbooks, and a build a customer team can run.

What we are looking for

• Six or more years building production backend software.
• Depth in at least one mainstream backend language and its testing ecosystem.
• Relational data modelling, query performance, and migration experience.
• API design that survives contact with a consumer you do not control.
• Experience with integration patterns and their failure modes.
• Ability to explain a technical trade-off to a program manager.

Helpful to have

• Public-sector or other regulated-domain experience.
• Event-driven or streaming architectures.
• Experience replacing a legacy application without a big-bang cutover.
• Contributions to open source.

Screening and eligibility

This position may require fingerprint-based background screening under the CJIS Security Policy before access to customer systems is granted. Some customer programs require United States citizenship. Eligibility is confirmed before assignment, not at application.
