Data and Security
Data Engineer
Build the platforms and pipelines that let an agency report on its own data without arguing about the numbers.
Agency reporting stalls on definitions more often than on tooling. This role builds the platform and the pipelines, and gets the governance far enough along that two departments can use the same word to mean the same thing.
What you will do
- Build data platforms and pipelines that consolidate operational data for analysis.
- Get data out of vendor systems the agency does not control, including the ones with no export worth the name.
- Implement data quality checks and make failures visible rather than silent.
- Support governance work: ownership, definitions, lineage, and the retention that applies to analytics copies.
- Build the reporting layer that dashboards and public data sit on.
- Handle deidentification and small number suppression where data is published.
What we are looking for
- Three or more years building data pipelines in production.
- Strong SQL and at least one general purpose programming language.
- Experience with a modern warehouse or lakehouse platform.
- Orchestration tooling and an instinct for idempotent, rerunnable jobs.
- Ability to trace a number back to its source when someone disputes it.
- Awareness that agency data describes real people.
Helpful to have
- Public-sector reporting or open data experience.
- Geospatial data handling.
- Streaming or sensor data.
- Experience with federal grant or program reporting extracts.
